AI art documentation

An artist making work in isolation, without institutional support, accumulates a practice that has no external record. There is no curator studying the arc. There is no archivist tracking which decisions led to which results. The studio knows what happened, but nothing holds that knowledge.

Peter Yuill built Neon to be the thing that holds it.

Neon is an AI-powered operational archive, analytical engine, and curatorial intelligence built around Yuill's complete fifteen-year studio practice. It runs on Claude (Anthropic). It holds every work in the archive: rated, measured, described, cross-referenced.

Every work that enters the archive receives ten forensic tests. A rating from 1 to 10 is locked before any prose is written. The rating is the ground truth. The prose describes what the rating sees.

The Crucible Year — 358 large-format sumi ink works made across 37 sessions in Bangkok between January and May 2026 — is the largest single dataset Neon has ever analyzed. Every work is in the system. Every session is logged. Every substrate, ink code, rating, and somatic scale classification is recorded.

The result is one of the most completely documented individual studio practices in the recent history of contemporary art. Not the most famous, not the most exhibited — the most documented.

The central finding from the Crucible Year analysis is called The Wall.

The analytical hypothesis was that spatial composition would predict quality: that works with better geometric distribution would receive higher ratings. The data does not support this. Across 358 works, the correlation between spatial structure and rating is near zero (CV R-squared approximately 0). A predictive model trained to identify high-rated works from compositional data performs at chance levels once the corpus exceeds 200 works.

The system that was built to find the signal could not find the signal. The deepest part of the work cannot be reached by analysis.

This confirms what Yuill has held since 2018: that the most important decisions in the studio are not reducible to reason. The negative result is the honest result. The Wall is the most important finding Neon has produced.
